Fender Picks Analog Reconfigurability For Guitar Amp
|
R. Colin Johnson
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Guitar amp maker Fender Musical Instruments Corp. has come up with a unique brand
of analog reconfigurability in a bid to create a universal amplifier. The technique is used in
Fender's CyberTwin amplifier, which lets musicians set their own sound combinations as well
as emulate all of the classic guitar amplifier sounds.
The new architecture eschews the use of digital signal processors to emulate tubes.
"We considered modeling the sound of tube amps with a DSP; theoretically it could be done,
given sufficient processing power and vacuum tube know-how," said Dale Curtis, vice president
of research and development at Fender. But ultimately Fender believed that "modeling tubes
using today's DSP technology could not be done well enough to meet our standards."

Where to buy PC MIDI Devices and Cables
|
Modern PCs, laptops, and notebooks have USB or mini USB ports. These USB ports
are universal interface ports that allow you to connect a lot of different devices to your
PC. To use Cyber Commander and to connect to the Cyber Twin amplifer and Fender Foot
Controller with your PC, you will need a MIDI device or two. We recommend using
USB-to-MIDI interface devices. They are easy to install and tend to work well.
We have found the Roland Edirol UM-1EX, UM-2EX, and UM-3EX USB-to-MIDI devices to operate
satisfactorily. Although any of these devices make a good choice, we have found the
UM-2EX to be the most convenient to use.
The Roland Edirol USB-to-MIDI interface devices can be found at your local music store
or can be ordered on-line. For more information please see
http://www.edirol.com/
Please note that Roland also supplies the UM-2EX with software drivers. These drivers are essential
for those computers that do not have MIDI drivers. We have tested and found these drivers to be
satisfactory. Please note that the Edirol UM-2EX device has a switch that allows use of either
the UM-2EX drivers or the existing MIDI drivers that came with your Windows PC. If the UM-2EX
Edirol drivers are installed on your PC, the Advanced Driver switch on the UM-2EX must be set
to On. Otherwise, leave the Advanced Driver switch set to Off. Once you set the switch, we recommend
you tape it in place to avoid inadvertent switching. Incorrect setting of this switch can cause MIDI
communication problems.
All of the MIDI devices have at least an input (IN) and/or an output (OUT) port. The Roland
UM-2EX has one IN and two OUT ports (OUT 1 and OUT 2). The “golden rule” to remember is that what
goes out of one device, goes into another device – the out and in ports connect together. To physically
connect these ports, you will need MIDI cables. One MIDI cable is required to connect one out-and-in pair.
The Roland Edirol UM-2EX USB-to-MIDI device has a built-in USB cable. The USB cable connects to any
USB port on your PC. The MIDI cables are not included with the UM-2EX. We recommend that high
quality MIDI cables be obtained. There are many choices available. We have used MIDI cables provided
by DigiFlex, DATAFLEX Series, NMIDI-XX (where XX is the length in feet). For more information please
